That fun feeling

I worked more on Pisces Rising, which is just a temporary title, tonight. And I am getting that inner flying feeling, the high that comes from writing something you are happy about.
I am doing something unusual, for me, with this WIP. I am writing it out of order. I knew one scene I wanted to do so I started with that, even though this scene is more towards the middle of the book. I am usually very linear with my writing. Even though I am linear, I am also a pantser so I can't skip a section I am having problems with because I do not have a firm outline of what I would skip forward to.
But with this story I am just having fun with it and not feeling the stress of dragging the words out of my soul right now. Maybe chick lit is the right genre for me.
Lyrics of the day-And I know you've been
using a cut-rate thesaurus
'Cause your adverbs have backed
up into your chorus
Now your verse is runnin' on verbs
that are way too weak"
But don't be downhearted,
I can fix it for you, sonny
It won't take too long,
it'll just take money

Comedy

Tonight I started working on Pisces Rising. I have never tried to write a humorus chick lit storybut it is turning out to be a lot of fun.
Of course I am unhappy about skipping around to work on another project. I did try to write some of Natalia/Jackson's story and some of Come Bcak to Me earlier but I wasn't feeling it.

Never Give Up

Sandra Scoppettone's Writing Thoughts: Never Give Up

This post gave me the shivers. Writing is certainly not easy and publication never certain but a story like this does give me hope.

I have a dream, my own.
And it's mine and mine alone.
It's been my friend since I was just a girl.

Song Lyrics of the day-( John Mayer, Daughters)
Ohh see that skin?
it's the same she's been standing in
Since the day
she saw him walking away
now she's left
cleaning up the mess he made

Template

9:30 am I changed the template because I could not figure out how to get links added to the last template.

11:30 am Back to the drawing board. I just realised the link does not work.

12 noon. Okay. I got it to work. Man, I suck at this kind of stuff.

20 Pages?

My online writing group asked for a pledge from each member of what they would accomplish by July 4th. I have pledged to write 20 pages. I know that is not much but for me it is if I am not in the writing zone. If I get on a roll I can write 5-10 pages in one sitting but then I may feel stuck for days. I would prefer steady output daily even if it is only 2 pages. But that is something I am still working on.

How much could you earn?

Even though my goal is not to survive on my income from writing, because I feel it would hurt my creativity to put that kind of pressure on it, I still was interested to know how much publishers pay.
Brenda Haitt has some info on that on her website-http://www.brendahiatt.com/id2.html

Permission to Write Crap

I am struggling with the fact that I can not seem to give myself permission to write any old thing for the first draft. I struggle over each scene and can't go on untill I feel a sense of satisfaction with all that has come before. As I get further into a WIP that becames harder and harder and eventually I put that WIP aside and move on to something else. I know I will never finsih a novel that way.

That title is taken

I came up with an idea for a chick lit type story about a girl obsessed with horoscopes. It wasn't anything I was planning on working on right away but I wanted to title it Pisces Rising.
Well I typed that into a search engine and found out it is already a title of a book. I was disappointed because the title sounded really cool to me.
The premise of the published book is mystery, not chick lit, but I still wouldn't title my WIP that now.
So it is back to the drawing board for a title. I could choose a different astrological sign or just go a different way with the title.

Natalia

The strangest thing happened to me yesterday, Natalia starting speaking to me. If you have read this journal from the start you know that Natalia is the heroine in Jackson's love story( The May 24th entry discusses her). Before yesterday I had the basic premise of his story. Plus, I knew Jackson's voice because he is a character in the novel I am working on titled Come Back to Me. But all I knew about Natalia was her name and that someone she knew died which is what drives her actions in the book.
Well out of no where in my mind I hear the word Homicide. The person Natalia knew was murdered and she wanted justice. I sat down and starting writing her first scene. Then I wrote Jacksons first scene.
Anyone who is not a writer probably thinks this sounds nuts but that is exactly how it happened.

Some Goals for this year

I suck at sticking to my goals. I start diets that I never stick to. And I have never finished writing a novel. Yet I have always wanted to lose weight and wanted to become a published author.
Anyway, here are some of my goals for the remainder of this year-
Participate in NaNoWriMo. That means trying to write 50,000 words in the month of November.
Finish writing my Harlequin Intrigue type novel, Come Back to Me.
Enter one contest.

Let's see how many I can accomplish.

Skipping the Prologue?

I was speaking to a famly member about the prologue I wrote for Come Back to Me and she said she usually skips reading prologues in books. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. I sure hope other people aren't doing that with the books they read.

They have names

I have named my four main characters for the Bridesmaids story.
Maggie
Dara
Lizzy
Sydney
Now I have to work on devolping a voice for each of them. I don't think I will use the changing narrator every chapter style that I considered, like was used in The Assistants. Instead I will go with dividing the book into four sections. Each character has a section titled by their name and that section is of their wedding. I still haven't decided if I want each section to be in first person or not.
I am having fun working on this new project. It is great to start something new and take a break from the pressure of trying to get Come Back to Me back on track. But I will get back to that WIP eventually.

Out of order?

This Bridesmaids story is going to span 25 years, starting in 1981. I am thinking of having the first section of the book be the second wedding, taking place in 1987. Then backtrack to the first wedding. Then the third and fourth. This way the story starts with a portait of the way this women have changed since college and the tension between them because of it. Instead of all the happy gooey feelings of when they are in college and pledging to be BFFs forever. Sound like a good idea or too confusing?

Casting

Today I cast my Bridesmaids for my new WIP. The way this idea came to me was a saw in my minds eye a scene playing out like a movie of a bunch of drunk bridemaids. I think this idea, in the right hands , could make a kick ass screenplay.
Think Three Weddings and a Funeral meets Steel magnolias.
But since I know nothing about writing screenplays and I need to work on devolping my novel writing skills I will try tomake it into a chick lit book.
I picked four tv and movie actresses to picture as my characters. I have never done that before when trying to write a novel but I have also never tried to write chick lit that makes readers, hopefully, LOL.
The chosen actresses:
Katie Holmes- she is the idealist one in the group
Gabrielle Union- she is career focused. Dry sense of humor. the most independent and seemingly least interested in marriage.
Renee Zellewager- my favorite actress ! This character is southern, flirty and maybe even a little ditzy.
Angelina Jolie this is the bitch of the group, the one that is most on the outside looking in.
These actresses ages vary too much to ever be right for a actual movie of best friends who are all the same age but each embodies the spirit of my character.
I am working on characters name and when I am sure of the ones I want I will make sure to post them.

Monday Updates

The online writing group I am part of has started posting updates about the progress we make each week. I need to get writing or else I will have nothing to post.

Book Set up

I am reading a book called The Assistants where there are five characters and each new chapter is a first person account of that characters life. That might be a good way to set up my bridesmaids story.
